Where does the unique sound of VARIOSAX come from?
Instrumentation
VARIOSAX is arranged in five voices:
- soprano
- alto I
- alto II
- tenor
- baritone + bass clarinet
All voices are played by three to five people.
Sound
- more than four octaves (C – es’’’)
- tone between string orchestra and organ
- wide variety of expressions – warm (à la clarinette) to aggresive (“brassy”)
- rich homophony to independent polyphony
- from choir to big-band sound
- expressive legato to groovy-percussive sound
- bass clarinet gives the bass part both warmth and fullness
