Where does the unique sound of VARIOSAX come from?

Instrumentation

VARIOSAX is arranged in five voices:

  1. soprano
  2. alto I
  3. alto II
  4. tenor
  5. baritone + bass clarinet

All voices are played by three to five people.

Sound

  • more than four octaves (C – es’’’)
  • tone between string orchestra and organ
  • wide variety of expressions – warm (à la clarinette) to aggresive (“brassy”)
  • rich homophony to independent polyphony
  • from choir to big-band sound
  • expressive legato to groovy-percussive sound
  • bass clarinet gives the bass part both warmth and fullness
